Shorty, a black miniature mule who has a mule’s distinctive ‘nose’ that sports a Mohawk-like mane, came from a sale in Minnesota. Like all equine animals, he needs a regular manicure to trim his hooves and, sadly, they hadn’t been trimmed in far too long. They were curled up like slippers and he could no longer walk! A lady bought him to save him from slaughter and a horse rescue in Wisconsin asked Mary if she would take him and she happily agreed. With regular trips to the farrier, or horse hoof specialist, in Kalona, Shorty gets around just fine now. He embraced his ability to run again with gusto and has slowed down only in the last few years.
